DHAKA: Protesters in Bangladesh burnt Pakistan’s flag and effigies of cricket star-turned politician Imran Khan on Wednesday in Chittagong to protest a resolution by the National Assembly condemning execution of Abdul Quader Mollah.

Protesters in Dhaka also marched towards the Pakistan High Commission but were stopped by the police. Eight people were injured as protesters clashed with the police. Security at the Pakistan High Commission has been increased as a result of the protests.

A resolution tabled by Jamaat-e-Islami backed by ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and Imran Khan’s PTI condemned the hanging of Mollah, a leader of Bangladesh’s Jamaat leader.

Mollah was convicted of war crimes in 1971 by a domestic war crimes tribunal named International War Crime Tribunal.

Speaking in the National Assembly, Interior Minister and a key figure of the ruling PML-N had said that Bangladesh should adopt a policy of ‘forgive and forget’.

Decision of Bangladesh’s Hasina Wajid led government to hang the elderly Jamaat leader triggered strong protests from opposition parties.

Though, Khan said that Pakistan should seek pardon for the events of 1971 war, his party decided to support the JI resolution in the lower house of the parliament.
