Government, Opposition Fail to Reach Consensus on Caretakers
ISLAMABAD: The government and opposition have yet to reach a consensus on the appointment of the caretaker prime minister despite the National Assembly and Federal Cabinet being dissolved on Saturday night.
Opposition leader Chaudhry Nisar remains adamant on the appointment of Justice (retired) Nasir Aslam Zahid while the government has not budged from the position it had taken on the names forwarded by it for the post.
Speaking to Geo News, PPP leader Qamar Zaman Kaira said the government had reservations over nominees put forth by the opposition leader but the door for negotiations was still open. “There is room for new names and we will take the process of dialogue and negotiations forward.”
Senior journalist and host of Geo News program ‘Capital Talk’, Hamid Mir said that new names were being mentioned for the office of caretaker prime minister. These include Mahmood Khan Achakzai, Asma Jahangir, Raza Rabbani, Afrasiab Khattak and Ishaq Dar.
Government finalises names for Parliamentary Committee
The ruling coalition has made preparations for a scenario where the matter of caretaker prime minister is sent to the parliamentary committee. The names for committee members have been finalised and include Khursheed Shah and Farooq Naek from the PPP, Ghulam Ahmed Bilour from the ANP and Chaudhry Shujaat from the PML-Q.
The PML-N is yet to finalise names from the opposition. According to sources, the PML-N is hopeful that the prime minister and opposition leader will reach a consensus by Monday evening.
Fazlur Rehman holds meetings with PML-N, PPP
JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has held meetings with a delegation from the PML-N and PPP leader Makhdoom Amin Fahim.
During his meeting with a delegation from the PML-N comprising Raja Zafarul Haq and Ishaq Dar, the JUI-F chief expressed reservations on withdrawal of Justice (retired) Shakirullah Jan’s name from the list of opposition nominees for caretaker prime minister. According to Fazlur Rehman he was not consulted before this decision was taken.
The JUIF chief also discussed the appointment of a caretaker prime minister with PPP leader Makhdoom Amin Fahim. During their meeting, names of possible candidates and the current political situation in the country were discussed.
